YOUR PARTNER IN WATER MANAGEMENT AND INFECTION CONTROL

What is Legionnaires’ Disease?

Legionnaires’ disease is a variant of pneumonia (lung infection) created by Legionella bacteria. Unlike COVID-19, which spreads through person-to-person contact, Legionnaires spread through tiny water vapor droplets that people breathe in. The most common areas Legionnaires reside in are large building water systems, including hotels, cruise ships, and especially hospitals.

Some examples where Legionella can grow in sections of large building water systems:

  1. Water heaters
  2. Water filters
  3. Showerheads, faucets (electronic or manual), pipes, valves
  4. Hot and cold water storage tanks
  5. Aerators

* Note: If these systems are not properly maintained.

Regulation Standards

The WSS Faucet Maintenance Program removes scale and mineral build-up from every faucet to eliminate harbors for bacterial growth and keep them flowing in a water-saving, splash-free, stream. All laminars receive new antimicrobial inserts to maintain effectiveness. You can be confident that code compliance is achieved and documented for every faucet in your facility, such as:

  1. Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD)
  2. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
  3. (ASHRAE) 188-2015 (Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems)

On June 24, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published on their website a toolkit which is a countermeasure for reducing Legionella. The toolkit is called “Developing a Water Management Program to Reduce Legionella Growth & Spread in Buildings.”
